Fishing
Blackfoot River has a huge array of fishing opportunities due to the wide range of game fish species. Some of these species are small and easy to catch, while others can grow to monstrous sizes and present enormous challenges. Some of the predominant species of Blackfoot River include bull trout, cutthroat trout, northern pike, brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bream, and crappie.
With an exception amount of trout species in Blackfoot River, many fly fishermen from across the United States and even the world travel to this waterway in order to target populations. While there are many different species of trout that are commonly targeted by fishermen, the two most prevalent species are brown trout and rainbow trout. The brown trout population is very dense in the stretch of water between Lincoln and North Fork.
Rainbow trout can be found in high abundance between North Fork and Clark Fork River. Depending on the amount of rainfall upriver, these portions of the waterway can become very turbulent. Fishermen should avoid the most turbulent areas of the Blackfoot River and fish in the area between the slow moving and turbulent waters. This area of flowing water is where trout often reside and feed. During times of low water levels, trout can be found closer to the center of the river. The contrary applies when the water level is above average. Throughout the year, fishermen can rely on a variety of flies, rods, and reels. During the Summer and warmer months of the year, anglers should resort to using dry flies. Wet flies can be used during the remainder of the year.
The northern pike is also a species that is frequently targeted by the fishermen of Blackfoot River. This trophy fish can be found throughout the waterway in several locations. The most notable areas include Corrick's River Bend, Red Rocks, and Thibodeau. When in shallow waters, fishermen should target weed beds using spinners, jigs, and spoons.
The popular largemouth bass species can also be found in various locations throughout Blackfoot River. This species can be readily found in the areas known as Thibodeau and Yellow Creek. Within these areas, largemouth bass tend to reside near aquatic vegetation, submerged timber, and drop offs. Once an ideal fishing location is selected, largemouth bass fishermen should use light tackle. Recently, deep diving crankbaits and imitation shad have been among the most successful choices.
Crappie can also be found in these areas, although they are found in the shallow areas under trees and in weed beds. This species can be targeted using bobbers, jigs, spinnerbaits, and fly rods. Crickets and nightcrawlers are among the most effective bait choices.
