Caddo Lake

TX

Spanning across a large and rugged area of Texas and Louisiana, Caddo Lake provides a fishing experience that is characterized by the adventurous vibe that the area is known for.  Caddo Lake was formed by the New Madrid earthquake of 1812, making this the only “natural” lake in Texas of any size.  Caddo fishermen will find that this scenic area is one of the best locations for catching the South’s most popular game fish.

 Fishing

With a large and healthy ecosystem, Caddo Lake is able to support a diverse community of game fish that can offer adventure and excitement to freshwater anglers.  The most predominant fish species of Caddo Lake include largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, chain pickerel, white bass, yellow bass, and sunfish.

The largemouth bass is a popular species that can be targeted near shallow weed beds and drop-offs during the early morning and evening.  When the water becomes warmer during midday, this species can be targeted in the deeper waters beyond drop-offs.  Jeems Bayou and Stacy Landing are both good locations to begin targeting this species.

Channel catfish, flathead catfish, and blue catfish can all be caught in Caddo’s deeper areas through the use of bottom rigs.  The waters near the dam have some excellent fishing holes for targeting catfish.  Chain pickerel, commonly referred to as pike, can be targeted in weed beds and bayous throughout Caddo Lake.  Any of the areas with aquatic vegetation such as Big Cypress Bayou and Goat Island are ideal for targeting this species.

Panfish such as crappie and sunfish can be found in shallow regions of the lake within the bayous and near the shoreline.  A variety of shallow areas are great for targeting these species, but Stacy Landing and Goat Island are among the favorites of local fishermen.  Many species of bass such as the yellow and white varieties can be targeted in the open waters as well as the lake’s bayous.

The Lake

Caddo Lake is a fresh body of water that is characterized by cypresses and large beds of aquatic vegetation.  Caddo Lake has a total surface area of 26,800 acres.  Of this total area, over half is covered by weed beds and other vegetation.  This body of water has a maximum depth of 20 feet.  Clarity fluctuates between moderately clear and stained depending on rainfall and sediment.

Caddo Lake is the premier fishing destination for the angler in search of an experience that is adventurous and exciting.
