Fishing
Any fishermen who visits Candlewood Lake will notice that there is a large and diverse community of fish. This provides a large array of opportunities that allow for different fishing styles. Some of the primary game species in Candlewood Lake include black crappie, bluegill, bullhead, brown trout, chain pickerel, common carp, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed, rainbow trout, rock bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, white catfish, white perch, and yellow perch. These game fish include large trophy species as well as tiny panfish. Among the many fish in Candlewood Lake, the trout species are commonly targeted. These can be found in high abundance near the hydroelectric dam and other areas of fast moving cold water. As a general rule, trout tend to reside near the entrances and exits of lakes and rivers. Still moving areas such as sheltered coves should be avoided when searching for trout. Fly rods or light tackle setups are the best options available when targeting these species. The largemouth bass is also a popular target of Candlewood Lake. This species can be caught during the Spring, Summer, and Fall in high abundance. When searching for this species, fishermen should target areas such as gaps in hydrilla beds, drop-offs, and waters just beyond shallow sections of the lake. A fish finder is very helpful when targeting largemouth bass. Fishermen should equip their rods with light tackle such as diving crank baits, buzz baits, and jigs. These will increase the chances of hooking a largemouth bass. Walleye is a species targeted by fishermen who have access to a boat and enjoy a challenge. It is a wise choice to use a crankbait when targeting walleye. A medium weight rod with a line of 10 to 15 pound test is also a good choice, as this fish can put up a strong fight. For the younger fishermen and those who like a casual day on the water, bluegill and pumpkinseed are the most abundant panfish of Candlewood Lake. These can be caught in the shallow areas near the shore and piers using jigs. These can also be cooked into a delicious meal at the end of a fun day of fishing.
