Fishing

With a large and healthy community of forage and game fish, there is seldom a shortage of fishing opportunities at Cass Lake.  The primary game targets of Cass Lake include crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, musky, rock bass, northern pike, yellow perch and walleye.

Musky and northern pike are popular targets of many midwestern waters and this also hold true for Cass Lake. Ideal fishing spots for musky and northern pike include the weed beds along Cedar Island and the channel between Cass and Pike Bay.  Muskie are considered to be the prize trophy targets of Cass Lake. The deep waters to the south of Star Island and the entrance to Moose Lake offer prime for musky fishing.

Largemouth bass, a favorite target of many fishermen, can be targeted in several locations across the entire lake.  During feeding times, the best option is to target weed beds and other obstructions where smaller species reside.  Specific locations to catch largemouth bass include the channel between Cass Lake and Pike Bay, the shoreline of Star Island, and the shallow waters to the west of the Potato Islands. Walleye.jpg

Walleye can also be targeted in several of these locations.  During the spawning season, anglers can target shallow regions for the opportunity to catch many smaller walleye.  Larger varieties can be targeted in the deep waters of Cass Lake throughout most of the year.

Panfish such as crappie, yellow perch and bluegill can be targeted in weed beds and near other obstructions throughout most of Cass’ shallow regions by using light tackle.  The weed beds near the Potato Islands and the western cove are great locations for targeting these species.

Cass Lake facilities and accommodations include tackle shops, public piers, boat rentals, paved boat landings, fueling stations, lodging, and nearby restaurants and grocery stores.
