Fishing
Cayuga Lake is home to a vast number of species that provide a plethora of opportunities for any angler who wishes to fish in its waters. Game fish range from large trophy fish to small panfish, so fishermen of all experience levels are able to enjoy a day on the water. Some of the predominant game fish species of Cayuga Lake include Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, northern pike, brown trout, largemouth bass, lake trout, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. The Atlantic salmon is a species that is unique to waters of the northeastern region of the United States. This game fish can be caught using a variety of strong fly rods and reels. During conditions when the water is low, fishermen should cast a line a slow moving current just beyond a drop off. When the water is normal or high, fly fishermen should target the slack waters near the shoreline. Dry flies can be used during the Summer, while wet flies are excellent during the remainder of the year. The waters surrounding Frontenac Island are great places to target Atlantic salmon. The various species of trout in Cayuga Lake will also offer some excitement for fly fishermen. Due to the trouts' preference of cold, fast moving water, these fish can be found in the area where Cayuga Lake feeds into the Seneca River. The turbulent waters should be targeted by fly rods using a variety of flies. The northern pike population possesses several trophy fish that are targeted by experienced sport fishermen. In order to catch these large individuals, fishermen should target the deep waters throughout the lake using trolling methods. The area where Cayuga Lake is at its widest is one of the best places to troll. Anglers should troll at speeds of 2 to 5 miles per hours using spoons, jigs, or spinners. Northern Pike can also be caught in deep weed beds during morning and evening feeding times. The area of water closest to Lansing is an excellent place to target due to the dense populations of smaller game fish and baitfish. In this same area, fishermen can target an abundant population of smallmouth bass. This species can be found in the usual hiding spots such as logs, submerged timber, and weed beds. Light tackle and fly rods are effective choices. Ideal baits include nightcrawlers, red worms, crickets, and minnows. The largemouth variety of bass can be found near the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and Seneca Falls. This species resides near drop offs and gaps in the vegetation, so these should be targeted using crankbaits, buzzbaits, or jigs.
