Clear Lake is home to very diverse populations of fish. Species of fish in Clear Lake include channel catfish, white catfish, largemouth bass, carp, crappie, and the popular rainbow trout. Numerous smaller species of fish can also be commonly found. While many anglers have a variety of the fish that they catch, the channel catfish and rainbow trout are considered the ideal catch of many. The channel catfish is most common in the deepest sections of the lake during the late Spring, Summer, and early Fall. Bottom rigs with a variety of bait tend to be the best tackle for this species. Rainbow trout are a popular game fish that are best caught during the early Spring and late Fall. This is because the rainbow trout prefer the cold water of Clear Lake during these time periods. Fishermen should test their luck near the numerous streams that feed into the lake for best results. Fly fishermen tend to have the best luck at catching rainbow trout, so it is wise to use a fly rod if the goal is to catch a rainbow trout. Clear Lake is also well known for its large populations of largemouth bass. Using light tackle and jigs during mid-Spring to early Fall, fishermen can catch plenty of bass in the vegetation of shallow portions of the lake. Other species of fish can be caught throughout the entire year. Fly fishing, light tackle, and bottom rigs have all been successful for fishing in Clear Lake, so it is to one's benefit to experiment with different set-ups.
Facilities
Just as there is a large selection of fish at Clear Lake, there are also many facilities and accommodations that will make a visit most enjoyable. Two marinas are available for large boat owners. Fueling stations are also available at the marinas for those with motor operated vessels. For the owners of small vessels such as motor boats, canoes, and kayaks, there are several boat landings and piers throughout the lake. These allow convenient entry and exit to and from the lake whenever necessary. There is also a tackle shop on Clear Lake that will ensure that there is no shortage of supplies for the fishermen who may have forgotten a piece of tackle or other necessary equipment. Running water and restrooms are also available to all visitors of Clear Lake.
The Lake
Clear Lake is fed by numerous cold water streams and springs. The large selection of fish in Clear Lake is largely due to its description. The area of the lake is 43,785 acres. The average depth of Clear Lake is 27 feet, but the maximum depth is 60. This lake is fairly deep which makes it an ideal location for many big game species. With 62 miles of shore, there is plenty of room for each fishermen to have their own quiet day on the water is he or she prefers.
