Fishing

The opportunities for fishing in Clear Lake are quite plentiful due to a healthy and diverse population of numerous game fish.  These species can offer an exceptional challenge to some of the best anglers of Wisconsin and the entire United States.  The primary game species of Clear Lake include bluegill, largemouth bass, musky, northern pike, crappie, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and walleye. The bluegill of Clear Lake offer some exceptional opportunities for anglers of many different skill levels due to their moderate difficulty and large population size.  Anglers in search of this species should target areas of the lake that are sheltered from the open water.  Such locations include the weed beds in the northwest portion of Clear Lake.  Various light tackle options are good choices for bluegill fishing.  The largemouth bass is one of the most frequently targeted species of Clear Lake due to its abundance.  Fishermen should target vegetation and obstacles such as submerged timber and other debris in order to find this species. Drop offs are also good locations to target largemouth bass.  The portions of the lake in the south and open water are both excellent locations for targeting this species.  Smallmouth bass can also be captured in these locations by targeting weed beds with light tackle.  The musky of Clear Lake is one of the most prized trophy targets of the experienced anglers who visit the lake.  In order to catch this species, fishermen should cast the weedbeds adjacent to deeper water on the central and northeast areas of Clear Lake.  Casting medium to larger glide baits and spinners are effective on Clear Lake but at times smaller lures work best.  The northern pike is another strong fighter that can be caught by targeting the lake’s edges during the morning and evening feeding times.  The banks closest to Clearview Drive offer an excellent area to search for pike.  Large lures and strong gear should be used when targeting this species.  The walleye is another common target of Clear Lake that can be found in large numbers during the Spring spawning season.  During this time period, fishermen should target the weed beds with crankbaits or slip bobber/live bait rigs.  For the anglers searching for large and challenging walleye, targeting the open water with crankbaits and jig/minnow combinations during the Fall holding to structure on the bottom.

Clear Lake has a total surface area of 515 acres.  The maximum depth of the lake is approximately 45 feet.  It has an average depth of 16 feet.
