Anglers will find that a visit to Douglas Lake is one of the most fulfilling fishing experiences available in the eastern United States. This artificial lake offers a wide range of fish that includes trophy fighters and and docile panfish. The primary targets of Douglas Lake are crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, blue catfish, sauger, walleye, white bass smallmouth and largemouth bass. All game species in in Douglas Lake have stable populations and make for an excellent day on the water.

The largemouth bass is a species that is commonly targeted by fishermen of Douglas Lake. This species is commonly found in the 5 to 10 pound range, but there have also been weigh-ins of largemouth bass at 12 pounds. Overall, this species is large and abundant in Douglas Lake. Fishermen in search of largemouth bass should target locations off of the lake's points or use a boat to reach weed beds during the spawning season. Productive areas for bass include Indian Creek, Muddy Creek and near Henderson Island.  As fishing tournaments at Douglas Lake have proven, deep crankbaits are the best tackle for largemouth bass in this body of water. Topwater lures, jigs, and buzz baits are also good options. During the morning and evening, the largemouth bass' primary feeding times, fishermen should target shallow waters. The deeper waters can be targeted during other times of the day.

Douglas Lake offers the perfect location for targeting panfish. Crappie and bluegill can be caught in the many coves and off deeper main lake points. Flat, Muddy and McGuire creeks are good areas to look for crappie.  These species are usually easy targets, but they can put up a fun fight when hooked with a light setup.

The walleye is also one of Douglas Lake's most popular targets. This is a cold water fish that is commonly found in northern waters or mountain lakes. While the prime time for catching walleye in other waters is the Spring, walleye are frequently caught during the Summer and Fall at Douglas Lake. This is due to the fact that walleye do not usually spawn in Douglas Lake; they travel to the rivers that feed into Douglas Lake to reproduce. Anglers in search of the walleye should travel to the deeper waters of Douglas Lake by a boat. Once in this location, a medium weight rod with light tackle is the best option. Crankbaits are often successful. Due to the walleye's ability to be a strong fighter, a line with a 10 to 15 pound test should be used.

There are numerous facilities and accommodations available to Douglas Lake's visitors. This includes 12 marinas, 16 boat ramps, boat rentals, tackle shops, lodging, fueling stations, and grocery stores.

The Lake

Douglas Lake is a large and narrow body of water. It has a total area of 44 square miles. It has a length of 60 miles and a narrow width of 3,527 feet. The complete shoreline of Douglas Lake measures out to 513 miles.

Fishermen should make every effort to visit Douglas Lake at least once due to its unique opportunities for freshwater fishing.
