Fishing
While Dworshak Reservoir is great for many activities ranging from hiking to sightseeing, the opportunities for fishing at Dworshak are numerous due to the healthy and large community of game fish. The major game fish of Dworshak Reservoir include black crappie, chinook salmon, bull trout, cutthroat trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and rainbow trout. This diverse community offers excitement to fishermen of all styles and experience levels. With regards to bass fishing opportunities, smallmouth bass are Dworshak's most abundant species. Dworshak is known to offer exceptionally large and numerous species of smallmouth bass to those who search. In 2006, the Idaho state record for smallmouth bass was captured at Dworshak Reservoir. This large bass weighed in at 9 pounds and 11.5 ounces. Throughout out every year, numerous other large smallmouth bass are also captured; these fish frequently weight in above 5 pounds. Fishermen in search of the smallmouth bass should search coves and areas sheltered from boat traffic and wind. These areas are often filled with weed beds and other ideal habitats for smallmouth bass. Once at an ideal location, fishermen should use light tackle. Light colored jigs are a good option to start with, but fishermen should resort to a variety of topwater lures if there are no bites. For those who prefer it, fly rods can also be used to capture smallmouth bass. Fly fishermen will also enjoy targeting the abundant populations of rainbow trout. In Dworshak Reservoir, this species is frequently found near the influx of water from the Dworshak Dam. These waters are turbulent and cold, so this is the preferred habitat of rainbow trout. A boat is necessary to reach these areas. Fishermen should avoid getting too close to the turbulent water, as this can present dangers. The most popular species of Dworshak Reservoir is the chinook salmon. This species is native to cold water lakes and rivers throughout North America and puts up an excellent fight. As this fish has a relatively lazy nature, it is best caught by trolling at slow speed of 2 to 4 miles per hour using large spoons. Frozen herring is one of the best baits for chinook fishing. The several species of panfish also present fun opportunities for fishermen. These can be caught in shallow waters using light tackle.
