Fishing
Anglers can experience a large range of fishing opportunities due to the large populations of fish species in the Fox River. This community includes both large game fish and small panfish. Some of the major game fish of the Fox River include muskie, largemouth bass, freshwater drum, flathead catfish, channel catfish, smallmouth bass, walleye, carp, and crappie.
Muskie is a large trophy fish that is commonly targeted by experienced anglers. In order to catch this species, fishermen should travel to a location known as the 172 Bridge. This area is surrounded by the deep, open waters that muskie prefer to reside in. Crankbaits are among the most successful tackle options during the Summer. Bucktails are great during the Spring and Fall.
Freshwater drum and a variety of catfish can be caught near the 172 Bridge and other deep areas of the Fox River.
There are very large individuals among the catfish population in the Fox River. The flathead catfish is a commonly targeted species due to its renowned fighting ability and large size. In order to capture any variety of catfish, fishermen should find deep areas of the waterway using a depth finder. The area of water near the dam is a notable location for targeting catfish. Once in an ideal fishing spot, anglers should cast a line to the bottom of the river. Fishermen should equip a medium to heavy weight rod with bottom rigs and a line of at least a 20 pound test. When targeting the larger individuals among the catfish populations, it is recommended that fishermen use a braided line of 40 pound test. Ideal baits include chicken livers, anchovies, shrimp, nightcrawlers, stink baits, and various cut baits.
For the fishermen that prefers a fish that offers a strong challenge, the walleye of Fox River can offer a fierce fight to any angler that hooks one. This species is very energetic and can grow beyond 10 pounds. The population of walleye is at its densest near the dam. Crankbaits, soft plastics, and drop shot are all excellent tackle options. For fishermen targeting species that reside in shallower waters, the east side of lower Green Bay is an excellent place to target.
In this area fishermen can find weed beds, drop offs, and other hiding spots that serve as ideal habitats for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and crappie. When targeting bass, fishermen should cast lines near the weed beds and other debris in shallow waters. Light tackle such as spinnerbaits and crankbaits have been successful.
The crappie populations tend to reside in shallow waters near the shoreline and points. Anglers should target pilings, weed beds, and the areas under overhanging tree limbs. This species is fun to catch and also can be cooked into a delicious meal.
