Fishing
The most popular game fish of Geist Reservoir include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill.
Both largemouth and smallmouth bass can be effectively targeted throughout the reservoir during the morning and evening feeding times. During such times, bass can be found in sheltered areas such as weed beds, drop offs, main lake points, and areas of submerged timber and debris. Small panfish and baitfish tend to reside in these areas, so it is natural that these are ideal places to fish during the predators’ feeding hours. The sprawls on the eastern side of the reservoir and the banks near Fox Road are both suitable locations for bass fishing.
Channel catfish can be targeted in Geist’s deepest areas. Such locations include the deep areas just before the dam and various fishing holes that can be located with the assistance of adepth finder. Alternatively, casting a line into any deep area in Geist Reservoir can be an effective way to catch channel catfish. Bottom rigs and a variety of smelly baits should be used when targeting this popular species.
Anglers can target crappie and bluegill in sheltered areas across the entire reservoir. The sprawls near the island and the narrow stretch between the island and Indianapolis are both great places to fish for these panfish. The sheltered parts of the northernmost end of the reservoir are also ideal for targeting crappie and bluegill. Light tackle or fly gear should be used for these species.
