Fishing
Grindstone Lake is a healthy body of water that supports a healthy population of fish. The most common species in Grindstone Lake include musky, crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and walleye.
By far the most abundant species among Grindstone’s fish populations, walleye can be found throughout most of the year. During the spring, fishermen should target this species near spawning beds that are found across various shoreline locations. The long northern shoreline offers an excellent stretch of habitat that is ideal for walleye as is the large flat on the southeastern shore. Throughout the entire spring to fall fishing season, walleye can be targeted in the lake’s deeper regions near the center of the lake. Since the lake has few islands or major points, simply travelling to the lake’s center is the best option available.
While not as prevalent as the walleye of Grindstone Lake, musky are common and are frequently targeted by trophy seekers. This species is known to provide an excellent challenge and can be targeted by trolling the deep waters of Grindstone Lake. The deep waters on the northern end of Grindstone Lake are suitable for musky fishing, but this species can be found in a variety of deep locations. Try the area near the "Post Bar" where it drops off from the shallows. With plenty of exposed shoreline and numerous weed beds, Grindstone Lake is also a great body of water for targeting musky.
The northern pike is not as common as the other major species of Grindstone, but it can be caught with a combination of skill and luck during the morning and evening feeding times. Try similar techniques and areas where musky roam to locate large pike.
Panfish such as bluegill yellow perch and crappie can be targeted in shallow regions throughout the entire lake. The southwestern shoreline and Grindstone Creek are both suitable locations for targeting these panfish. Light tackle or fly gear should be used when targeting panfish.
Smallmouth bass can also be targeted on the southwestern shore, but fishing near the southeastern shorelines and near the rocks will likely lead to a successful experience. Largemouth bass are not very common in Grindstone Lake, but they can be targeted near drop offs and shallow areas during the morning and evening feeding hours.
