Fishing
While the community of fish at Lake Anne is not nearly as diverse at the communities in large midwestern lakes, there is a high abundance of southern favorites. This offers a fun opportunity for serious and casual fishermen. Some the main species of Lake Anne include largemouth bass, striped bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, and walleye. The largemouth bass is a species that is very popular among serious fishermen and those who enjoy exciting fishing adventures. This species is renowned for its large size and ability to put up a strong fight. In Lake Anne, fishermen are able to find largemouth bass in an abundance that is above average. This dense population can be found near weed beds and drop offs during the prime feeding times of morning and evening. Largemouth bass fishermen should target areas with dense aquatic vegetation. Once in these areas, fishermen should cast a line near the gaps and edges of the weed beds. Areas under overhanging trees are also great places to target. A line of 15 to 20 pound test should be used since the largemouth bass can put up a very challenging fight at trophy sizes. Ideal tackle choices include imitation shad, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and other light tackle options. Channel catfish can also be found in abundance at Lake Anne. As they do in most bodies of water, the catfish prefers to reside in deep areas. Fishermen should target deep fishing holes near the center of the lake. The ideal setup includes a medium weight rod with a line of 15 to 20 pound test. Bottom rigs and weights should be equipped. Excellent bait options include stink baits, minnows, anchovies, squid, shrimp, and a variety of cut baits. Most baits that emit a strong odor are quite effective. Some very large channel catfish have been weighed in at Lake Anne, so fishermen in search of this species should be ready for a fight. Fishermen in search of panfish will enjoy the vast populations of crappie, bluegill, and sunfish that Lake Anne has to offer. All of these species can be caught with similar methods near the shoreline and piers. These panfish reside in weed beds and around debris that offer protection from large predators. When targeting any of these species, fishermen should use light tackle such as top lures, jigs, small crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Fly fishermen will also find these species to be suitable targets.
