Fishing
Since Lake Austin is stocked whenever the fish populations fall out of balance, there is always a sufficient supply of fish for the habitat and anglers. While fishermen should not expect to find the exotic fighters that can be found in places like Florida and the Midwest, Lake Austin provides an excellent selection of simple game fish that are great for both avid fishermen and families. The primary species of fish in Lake Austin include largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish.

There are occasional captures of blue and spoonbill catfish as well. There is also a population of grass carp in Lake Austin, but these should be returned to the water immediately after capture; they are protected by a permit. This small reservoir keeps the populations dense, so catches are often very frequent.

The largemouth bass is the species that is most often targeted by fishermen who enjoy a challenge. Due to Texas' climate, fishing seasons are very long and bass can be caught throughout the entire year. During the Winter, fishermen should target deep fishing holes. During the late-Spring, Summer, and early-Fall, fishermen should turn their attention to the shallow waters. During these seasons, largemouth bass linger in Lake Austin's vast infestation of hydrilla or near other obstructions such as logs or rocks. During all seasons, anglers should equip their fishing rods with light tackle such as spinners, jigs, and crankbaits. All of these kinds of tackle have proven to be very effective at catching largemouth bass, so experimentation is the best option available.

Channel catfish can also be caught, but the populations are not very dense. Fishermen should use a bottom rig equipped with a stink bait or another bait with a strong scent. Since catfish are bottom feeders, using a rig that will stay on the bottom of the lake will increase one's chances of hooking a catfish. This species can be a strong fighter depending on its size, so a line with a 10 to 15 pound test helps greatly. There are also many smaller species of panfish in Lake Austin that are excellent for families or those who would like to enjoy a simple day on the water. These panfish can be caught near the shoreline using surface baits such a spinners and jigs. A fly rod is also an exciting method of capture. These species are very tasty.
Facilities
Since Lake Austin is located right next to the city bearing the same name, there are many facilities and accommodations available. Piers, paved boat landings, tackle shops, grocery stores, and sleeping accommodations are all available to those who need them.
The Lake
Lake Austin is a small and simple lake. Its total area is 1600 acres and it is 75 feet at its deepest point. While this is not as large as many other lakes in the United States, it is able to provide for its population of fish. The bass population also thrives because of the dense hydrilla and other weeds that is caused by this. 

Fishermen should make an effort to visit Lake Austin if they enjoy quiet days of fishing on the water.
