Fishing
Lake Dunlap has some excellent opportunities for fishing that will appease anglers of many skills and experience levels. This is largely due to the reservoir's large variety of fish species. Some of the predominant species of Lake Dunlap include largemouth bass, stripe bass, crappie, white bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and sunfish.
The largemouth bass is a species that is commonly targeted throughout the entire United States; Lake Dunlap is no exception. In order to catch this species, fishermen should target coves, weed beds, sand beds, submerged timbers, and other areas of debris that serve as great habits for largemouth bass. The northern area in the center of Lake Dunlap is an excellent place to target due to these characteristics. Once in these locations, anglers should cast a line of 10 to 15 pounds equipped with light tackle such as spinnerbaits, deep diving crankbaits, imitation shad, and jigs. Many different methods are effective, so experimentation with new tackles may also prove successful.
Lake Dunlap is also renowned for its large abundance of crappie. This species can be found in shallow waters throughout the entire lake. Fishermen are able to effectively catch crappie from the shoreline, piers, and boats in shallow waters. Fishing in coves, weed beds, and other areas sheltered from the open water usually serve as great crappie fishing locations. The anglers who target this popular species should equip their light weight rods with light tackle such as bobbers, jigs, and spinners. Ideal baits include minnows, nightcrawlers, and red worms. Fly rods can also be used to effectively capture crappie.
This reservoir also offers unique opportunities for high quality catfishing. As they are in most bodies of freshwater, Lake Dunlap's catfish can be found in the deep fishing holes. Since the deepest waters of Lake Dunlap are located below the dam, this area is excellent for the bottom-feeding catfish. All varieties of Lake Dunlap's catfish can be found in this area, but the channel catfish is the most common species. Fishermen who target this species should use bottom rigs equipped with catfish hooks and 1 or 2 ounce weights. Stink baits, chicken livers, nightcrawlers, and anchovies can all be used as effective baits. Casual fishermen and families will enjoy the populations of sunfish that linger near the shoreline and in weed beds. This species can be caught using light tackle or fly rods. It can also be cooked into a delicious meal after an exciting day of fishing.
