This belief is widespread throughout the Florida fishing community and major tournaments are held at Lake Istokpoga as a result. The major game species of Lake Istokpoga include largemouth bass, black crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, bream, bluegill, and smallmouth bass. The most popular species in this body of water are largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishermen in search of largemouth bass should test their luck in an area known as the West Wall. This location is in western central part of the lake. This area is home to many trophy fish and the tournament winners commonly catch their fish in this area. Those searching for largemouth bass should cast a line in the deeper waters closer to the center of the lake or in the gaps between hydrilla beds. Both locations work very well if the proper setup is used. Fishermen will find that the best option available is to use a medium weight rod with line of 10 pound test and light tackle. Tackle options can vary, but spinners, jigs, and buzz baits are often effective. Smallmouth bass can be found in the northeastern corner of the lake. This area has a dense growth of weed beds that provide the smallmouth bass with their preferred habitat. Anglers should equip a small rod with a line of light test and topwater baits and lures. A fly rod can also be used to successfully catch smallmouth bass. The black crappie is a specie that is also commonly targeted due to its above average abundance in Lake Istokpoga. This species can be feisty, but they are usually an easy catch. Fishermen should search for black crappie in the eastern central area of the lake. A fly rod or light tackle setup is most ideal for black crappie fishing.
