Fishing

Due to its clean and open waters, Lake Keowee is able to support many of the popular freshwater game targets.  These game species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, rainbow trout, brown trout and catfish.

As a popular bass lake, the largemouth bass is a favorite target of many fishermen who visit Lake Keowee.  This species can be targeted in deep waters on hot days, but the best strategy is to target the shallower weed beds during the morning and evening feeding times.  Anglers should use a variety of light tackle to target locations such as Mile Creek, Crow Creek, Laural Creek, and various points and shoreline weed beds.  Smallmouth bass can also be found near the shoreline, although they tend to reside in shallower waters than the largemouth bass variety.  Mile Creek, Cane Creek, and all of Keowee Lake’s narrow sprawls are ideal for targeting smallmouth bass.  The spotted bass can be captured by using the same strategies and targeting similar locations.  Use the graph below to locate the many fish cribs in Lake Keowee.

Fishermen can also target a variety of catfish species in Keowee Lake.  As they do in other bodies of water, the catfish of Keowee reside on the bottom of the lake in deep areas.  The waters near the two dams and old creek beds are good places to begin targeting catfish.  Bottom rigs are recommended due to the bottom feeding habits of catfish.

Smaller species of fish such as crappie, bluegill, and yellow perch can all be found in coves, creeks, and the shorelines of Lake Keowee.  Anglers should target waters near weed beds, points, and other sheltered areas.  Good fishing spots include the South Cove, Crooked Creek, Cane Creek, and Crow Creek.

Trout reside in the tributaries to and from Lake Keowee.  Try Eastatoe Creek from the backwaters of Lake Keowee upstream to S.C. State Highway S-39-143 (Roy Jones Road).
