Fishing
The opportunities for fishing in Lake Michigan are incredible. There is a large and diverse community of fish that draw in fishermen from across the globe. Both professional and recreational fishermen will enjoy the amazing experiences that are constructed on this Great Lake. Fish species at Lake Michigan include musky, northern pike, crappie, yellow perch, lake trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, king and chinook salmon. There are also numerous other species that will capture the attention of casual fishermen and families. There is something for everyone, regardless of age or skill level. As it is with most freshwater bodies of water, a favorite species of Lake Michigan is the largemouth bass. Due to the colossal population sizes at Lake Michigan, the largemouth bass can be caught throughout the entire year in a variety of locations. During the late-Fall, Winter, and early-Spring, this species can be found in the depths of Lake Michigan. In order to catch these fish, it is necessary for fishermen to use a boat. It is important to check the weather before using a boat on Lake Michigan, because the waves can become very violent and dangerous. Once at a proper depth, fishermen can use light tackle such as spinners, jigs, and crankbaits. These are often the best tackle choices if the bass are biting and the conditions are right. During the warmer months, largemouth bass move to the shallow waters. Fishermen can use a small boat or fish from the shore in order to catch the bass during this time period. Using light tackle, fishermen should target sand beds for best results. The lake trout is also a popular species among game fishermen. This species prefers very cold water and is most frequently caught during the early-Spring and late-Fall. Fishermen should cast light tackle or use a fly rod near the numerous springs and streams that feed Lake Michigan. This is where trout tend to reside due to their preference for cold, moving water. Lake Michigan is also the home to king salmon, a large game species. In order to catch these, fishermen should use trolling methods between mid-Spring and late-Fall. King Salmon prefer slow trolling speeds of about 2 to 3 miles per hour due to their sluggish nature. Downriggers and a variety of metallic colored spoons are idea. During the morning and evening feeding times, king salmon can be found close to shore. They travel to the deeper waters during the day to rest. This is important in establishing the best locations to troll depending on the day. Numerous species of small game fish can also be captured across the entire lake. This allows for a fun day on the water for fishermen of all ages and experience levels.
