Lake Milton is an great location for anglers of various experience levels and skills. Due to the wide diversity of fish species and size, fishermen are able to use a huge variety of fishing techniques. Some of the predominant game fish species of Lake Milton include walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, yellow perch, white bass, and muskie. The walleye is a common target among large game fish. The larger varieties of this species can grow beyond 10 pounds and put up an excellent fight. In order to find large trophy walleye, fishermen should travel to the deepest waters of Lake Milton. Fishermen will find that the deep waters near the dam on the western side of the lake has a dense population of walleye. Ideal tackle options include crankbaits, soft plastics, and jigs. During the spawning season, fishermen can find walleye in large quantities throughout shallow waters. The waters around Mahoning Avenue are great during this time. Largemouth bass can also be found in Lake Milton throughout shallow waters. In general, bass tend to reside near weed beds, drop offs, pilings, submerged timber, and other hiding spots. The areas of Lake Milton near Jersey Street and Ellsworth Road are excellent locations for targeting largemouth bass. Once a fishing location has been established, fishermen should resort to using a variety of light tackle. Great tackle options include deep diving crankbaits, bucktails, spinner baits, soft plastics, and jigs. Due to the wide range of largemouth bass sizes, a medium weight rod with a test of 10 to 15 pounds should be used. The bass in Lake Milton are known to grow beyond 11 pounds, so this is a wise option. The muskie of Lake Milton offer excellent targets to fishermen in search of a challenging trophy fish. This species can weight above 30 pounds, so it can be a worthy opponent to event he most experienced of fishermen. The western dam is the premier fishing location for targeting muskie. In this area, fishermen have the option to troll from a boat or fish from the shoreline. Trolling should be done at speeds of 2 to 5 miles per hour. Good tackle options include crankbaits, spinnerbaits, soft plastics, bucktails, and drop shots. Casual fishermen and families will likely enjoy targeting the species of panfish in Lake Milton. The most predominant species include crappie and bluegill. These species can be caught in the shallow waters around Jersey Street and Mahoning Avenue. Fishermen should target weed beds and areas of cover using light tackle or fly rods.
