Fishing
While many lakes have at least one signature game species that it is best known for, Lake Minnetonka has several. There are many large, fighting species in Lake Minnetonka that ensure that fishing trips are fun and exciting. Species at this lake include walleye, muskellunge, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, perch, and numerous small fish species. Among Lake Minnetonka's species, walleye is one of the favorites due to its absence in lakes found in warmer parts of the United States. The walleye can be caught beginning in the mid-Spring until late-Fall. During the Spring, females travel to the shallow sand beds near the shore to spawn. This is a perfect opportunity for fishermen. During this time period, anglers should use a medium weight rod with light tackle such as jigs or crankbaits. Brightly colored tackle works the best. During the Summer and Fall, most walleye reside in the deeper waters of Lake Minnetonka. Fishermen should resort to trolling methods for best results during these seasons. 4 to 6 miles per hour is the ideal trolling speed for walleye. Lake Minnetonka is also known for its largemouth bass. The population of this species is large and many have been taken as trophy fish due to their large size. Largemouth bass can be caught between the months of March and November. They tend to reside in the deeper waters of Lake Minnetonka during the colder months. Once at the proper depth, light tackle such as spinners, jigs, and crankbaits can be used. When the water temperature warms during the late Spring and Summer, largemouth bass move to the shallow waters close to the shore. They often linger in the sandy areas near aquatic plants, rocks, logs, and other hiding spots, so these are excellent places to cast a light tackle set-up. For those interested in trolling aggressive fighting fish, northern pike and muskellunge can be found in the deeper sections of the lake. These species can grow very large and prove to be a difficult catch for even seasoned anglers. Muskie is the primary trophy target among big game fishermen. The muskie can be caught during most of the year, but they can be readily found in shallow waters beginning in late-August. During this period, fishermen should use top water baits and bucktails from the shore or a small boat. This species puts up a hard fight, but the picture taking and sense of pride is well worth the effort. Lake Minnetonka also provides a large selection of small fish that are great for families and casual fishermen. Minnetonka also has a unique opportunity for ice fishing during the Winter. Ice fishing is exciting and species like walleye and crappie can be caught.
