Fishing

Lake Monroe is teeming with largemouth bass, crappie, hybrid striped bass, walleye, channel catfish, and bluegill.

BassThe largemouth bass is the most frequently targeted species in the lake due to its high abundance and decent range of sizes. Fishermen in search of this species should target gaps in weed beds, drop offs, and sheltered areas near deep water. Specifically, the Paynetown and North Fork areas of Lake Monroe are ideal places to target largemouth bass.

While not as popular as largemouth bass, the crappie is a popular target among both serious anglers and recreational weekend fishermen. Fishermen are often successful in catching Monroe crappie by using light tackle in sheltered areas such as weed beds and submerged timber. Fairfax and Hardin Ridge are both great locations for beginning a day of crappie fishing.

Hybrid striped bass roam the open waters of Lake Monroe and can usually be targeted in deep waters.  Fishermen should target hybrid striped bass in locations beyond drop-offs. Productive areas include the 446 bridge and the Monroe Dam.

Throughout most of the year, walleye can also be targeted in Monroe’s deep areas. A variety of tackle options are available, but crankbaits tend to be a reliable choice. In the Spring, numerous but smaller groups of walleye can be targeted near shallow spawning sites.

Monroe’s channel catfish can be targeted in deep areas with bottom rigs and a large range of bait options.

Fishermen in search of bluegill and other panfish should stick to the shoreline and weed beds.  Look for bluegill along the top of breaks and emerging weed beds.  Light tackle or fly rods should be used when targeting these smaller species.
