At Lake Oahe, fishermen have the chance to catch many species of fish from the lake's vast aquatic community. Species of fish at Lake Oahe include walleye, northern pike, chinook salmon, channel catfish, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass. All of these fish thrive very well in Lake Oahe due to its cold waters and healthy habitats. One of the most popular targets of Lake Oahe is the chinook salmon. This species is unique to the cold waters of the northern portions of the United States. Many anglers will make trips from across the country to take advantage of Lake Oahe's chinook salmon population. This species is in high abundance across the entire lake. For best results, fishermen should result to trolling techniques. Using large spoons while trolling at a speed of two to five miles per hour is the best option available. Frozen herring is an excellent bait that many chinook salmon will bite. Once hooked, it is important to fight the salmon to exhaustion before reeling it in; reeling in a chinook salmon at full strength can result in a broken line. The northern pike is also a popular species that can be caught by trolling the waters. This species is commonly found in the lower portion of Lake Oahe where the Cheyenne River enter the reservoir. At this location, trolling rigs equipped with herring or shad can be used to hook a pike. This species is a strong fighter and provides an excellent challenge to both seasoned and green fishermen. Among local fishermen and visitors, the walleye is highly regarded as one of Lake Oahe's most exciting game fish. During the spawning season, this fish can be found in large numbers near shoreline. During the rest of the year, walleye reside in the deep waters across the entire lake. Light tackle such as crankbaits, jigs, and spinners can be used to successfully catch a walleye. In the deep waters, walleye are commonly caught at a weight of 5 to 10 pounds. Regardless of their weight, the walleye always puts up a strong fight. Overall, this a fun fish to fight; the feeling of accomplishment after reeling in a walleye is one of the greatest feelings. The smallmouth bass can also be found in high abundance throughout Lake Oahe. Fishermen targeting this species should travel to an area known as Pierre. This location is at the southernmost point of Lake Oahe and smallmouth bass reside among the vegetation in this area in high numbers. Fishermen should use light tackle or fly rods to catch smallmouth bass.

With a total area of 370,000 acres, Lake Oahe is massive. At its deepest point, Lake Oahe is 205 feet. It has a length of 231 miles and 2,250 miles of shoreline.
