Lake Okeechobee is an extremely large body of water. Its entire area covers 730 square milse. Okeechobee has 135 miles of shoreline and is 29 miles in width. Species of fish found in the Lake Okeechobee include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, black crappie, redear sunfish, bluegill, and several others. Among the species of fish that are caught at Lake Okeechobee, the largemouth bass and black crappie are the most popular. Largemouth bass can be caught through the entirety of the lake, but they tend to linger near hydrilla and other aquatic vegetation. Fishermen should use light tackle, jigs, or spinner for best results. Due to the warm Florida weather, these bass can be caught very early and late in the year; they can be caught as late Winter and as late as early Winter. Lake Okeechobee's largemouth bass have set records in the past, so the largemouth bass population thrives very well in this habitat. Black crappie can also be caught during the entire year except for the coldest months of winter. Fishing with spinners, bobbers, light tackle, and small hooks are the best methods to catch this species. The black crappie's preferred habitat is in the shallow water near the shore, so it is advisable to fish from the bank or a pier.
