Lake Sammamish offers anglers a variety of opportunities for testing skills on the healthy community of game fish that can be found. Species of fish in Lake Sammamish include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, catfish, chinook salmon, coho salmon, kokanee, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, and numerous species of smaller panfish.
Lake Sammamish is most well known for its abundant populations of smallmouth bass. While there are largemouth bass in Lake Sammamish, the chance of catching a smallmouth bass is much greater. Fishermen in search of this abundant species should be sure to test their luck in the northwestern waters of Lake Sammamish. There is a fishing pier in this location that is a great choice, but fishermen with a boat will have better access to the areas that smallmouth bass often reside near. Check Jensens Cove near the state park and the very northern area where the Sammamish River flows in. Numerous rod setups can be effectively used, but light tackle such as jigs, spinners, buzzbaits, and artificial worms are quite successful. For those who prefer fly fishing or prefer a challenge, the fly rod is also a great choice when targeting the gaps between weed beds.
The chinook salmon is a target in Lake Sammamish that offers a fun and exciting challenge to fishermen of all experience levels. This species is best captured through the use of trolling in the deep waters of Lake Sammamish. Trolling rigs should include large spoons and frozen herring. The ideal trolling speed is 2 to 5 miles per hour. This is largely due to the fact that the chinook salmon is relatively lazy and will only act aggressively during its prime feeding times. Salmon season opens during late August each year.
Many fishermen, especially children and casual anglers, will find much excitement in targeting the yellow perch. This species is sometimes a feisty fighter and can be found in a high abundance throughout the entire lake. The best locations for yellow perch fishing is from the shoreline or the northwest pier. Light tackle can be used effectively. Successful bait choices include artificial worms and nightcrawlers.

In comparison to other major lakes throughout the United States, Lake Sammamish is fairly small. Lake Sammamish has a total area of 8 square miles. It has a length of 7 miles and a width of 1.5 miles. This lake has a maximum depth of 105 feet and an average depth of 58 feet. Despite its small area, Sammamish has incredible opportunities for fishing that are scarcely found in many of North America's other bodies of water. The depth of Lake Sammamish allows for the maintainable population of large game fish that it is known for.
A visit to Lake Sammamish is well worth the trip for anglers with a genuine interest in freshwater fishing.
