Fishing

Of the numerous species that reside in Lake Superior, the primary game targets include musky, northern pike, salmon (Coho, Chinook, Pink), walleye, lake trout, brook trout, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, whitefish, yellow perch, bluegill, crappie and burbot (Eelpout).

The musky is a trophy target that is often regarded as one of the most difficult species to catch in Lake Superior.  Anglers in search of this species should troll various areas of the lake.  Good locations include deep, open waters and near the mouth of the St. Louis River.  The northern pike is also a powerful fighter that is commonly targeted by serious fishermen.  Fishermen should troll for pike in weedy areas and along the shoreline.  Isle Royale and the North Shore are both ideal locations for targeting northern pike.

Salmon offer exceptional challenges for many Midwest fishermen and can be targeted by trolling the entirety of Lake Superior.  During the fall, fishermen should travel to the rivers where the salmon migrate.

Walleye can be targeted near the North Shore during the spring spawning seasons and in the open waters throughout the majority of the year.  The various species of trout in Lake Superior can be targeted in areas of cold, fast moving water.  The mouths of the inflow rivers and brooks and streams are good places to target. Bass can be found near shallow weed beds and other obstructions that are located along many of Lake Superior’s shorelines.  The Arrowhead region and the North Shore are both excellent locations for targeting smallmouth bass and rock bass.  Burbot can be targeted throughout the deep, open waters of Lake Superior throughout most of the year by using live baits and insects.
