Lake Tarpon is nationally renowned for its great populations of freshwater game fish. Trophy fish and smaller panfish can both be captured in this body of water. Some of the main game species of Lake Tarpon include largemouth bass, crappie, striped bass, and bluegill. Lake Tarpon is best known for its opportunities for largemouth bass fishing. In 2012, Bassmaster listed Lake Tarpon in the top 100 lakes to fish for bass in the United States. This is largely due to the fact that Lake Tarpon has a healthy environment that is able to support an expanding population of largemouth bass of many sizes. In Lake Tarpon, largemouth bass can be found near the gaps and edges of weed beds. Drop offs are also great places to find largemouth bass. Anderson Park and Chestnut Park are both great places to begin targeting largemouth bass. When the weather is very hot or cold, it is necessary to use a boat to travel to the deeper waters of Lake Tarpon in order to seek out largemouth bass. Regardless of location or season, light tackle is always the best option available. Diving crankbaits should be used in deeper areas, while spinnerbaits and buzzbaits should be reserved for fishing in the shallow waters near weed beds. Artificial worms and tube jigs also quite effective. Fishermen will find that striped bass offer a challenge that is hard to pass up. This species can be found in the deep waters of Lake Tarpon. Striped bass can be caught with a variety of fishing methods. Light tackle setups, trolling rigs, and bottom rigs have all proven successful when targeting Tarpon's striped bass populations. Most anglers will opt to use the trolling method, as this is very exciting and is considered by many to be the most fun way to catch striped bass. When the trolling method is chosen, a lure should be able to reach within three feet of the the lake floor. The ideal speed is 2 to 4 miles per hour. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and tube jigs are all excellent tackle options. When using light tackle, the water can be chummed with canned corn in order to attract predators to the area. A variety of light tackle options can be used, but spinnerbaits remain effective. For the casual fishermen hoping for a successful day on the water with his or her family, the panfish of Lake Tarpon offer the perfect opportunity for anglers of all ages. These species are commonly found near the shoreline. Fishermen should target areas near pilings, hydrilla beds, logs, and boulders. Once a fishing location is chose, anglers should use a light tackle setup or a fly rod. Bluegill and sunfish offer excellent opportunities for fun and excitement. They can also be cooked into a delicious meal after a fun-filled day on the lake.

Lake Tarpon has a total area of 2,500 acres. At its deepest point, this natural lake is 118 feet.
