Fishermen can enjoy an array of species ranging from panfish to trophy targets. Some of the main game fish species of Lake Wawasee include northern pike, bluegill, largemouth bass, redear sunfish, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass. Northern pike is a species that can be found throughout the lake in deep waters and in shallow weed beds. During the mornings and evenings, fishermen should target weed beds while the pike are hunting bait fish. In these areas, fishermen should use light tackle such as spinners and jigs. During the remainder of the day, anglers can find northern pike in deep waters such as channels. Trolling methods should be utilized in these deeper areas. Trolling at speeds of 2 to 5 miles per hour with crankbaits, spinners, and spoons is very effective. The largemouth bass of Lake Wawasee are very prevalent throughout the coves and areas of dense vegetation. Fishermen in search of this species should target an area of Lake Wawasee known as Johnson Bay. This area has weed beds and a high abundance of largemouth bass along the shoreline. Anglers should use a medium weight rod equipped with a line of a 10 to 15 pound test. Light tackle such as deep diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are all effective options. Smallmouth bass can also be found in this area and in coves throughout the lake. Spinners, jigs, and bobbers are great tackle choices for this species. Fly rods are also effective for smallmouth bass fishing. Ideal baits for this species include nightcrawlers, red worms, minnows, crickets, and artificial worms. For the fishermen who prefer a more laid back day on the water, panfish such as bluegill and redear sunfish can be found in high abundance. These species can be found throughout Lake Wawasee along the shoreline and in shallow waters. Fishing from piers and boats in order to target weed beds and the lake's points is a great way to find plenty of panfish. These species can be caught using light tackle or fly rods. Good baits for bluegill and sunfish include nightcrawlers, crickets, minnows, and red worms. These species are fun to catch and provide a delicious meal after a day on the water.
