Fishing
Anglers at Lake Winnebago will realize that there are vast populations of many species found in the coldwater and warmwater lakes of the United States. Some of these species are prime targets of tournament fishermen, while others are excellent for the casual fishermen spending a day on the water with his or her family. The primary game species of Lake Winnebago include walleye, muskie, yellow perch, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, flathead catfish, bluegill, freshwater drum, white bass, and several species of sunfish. Bluegill and sunfish are game species that are excellent for both experienced and casual fishermen. In the shallow waters of Lake Winnebago, these panfish can caught on light tackle or a fly rod. Using the public fishing piers and the shorelines are great options for Winnebago's panfish. These species tend to hide near weed beds and pilings. For fishermen seeking large panfish, it is necessary to use a boat to travel to weed beds in deeper waters. Lake Winnebago's bluegill are known to grow beyond 10 inches, so it may be a worthy challenge to try to catch one. Both of the largemouth bass and smallmouth bass populations thrive in Lake Winnebago; their populations can be found in high abundance. For fishermen seeking largemouth bass, the shoreline near the Fox River is an excellent option. This area is rich with smaller baitfish that the largemouth bass prey on. Once in this location, fishermen should use a jig or diving crankbait. A medium weight rod equipped with a line of 10 pound test is also recommended, because largemouth bass in Winnebago are known for their strong fight. Smallmouth bass can be found in and near the various coves in Lake Winnebago. These areas are sheltered from the weather and predators while allowing the populations to soar. Fishermen should find one of these coves using a boat and cast a topwater lure or jig. Nightcrawlers and artificial worms are excellent bait choices. For the fishermen who enjoys a more difficult challenge, fly rods are also an option. Walleye can also be caught in average abundance at Lake Winnebago. During the Spring spawning season, numerous small females can be found near the shoreline. This allows fishermen to target a dense population without putting much effort into finding a target. For the angler who prefers larger walleye and a strong challenge, males that weigh beyond 10 pounds can be found in the depths of Lake Winnebago throughout the year. A crankbait is the best tackle option. Northern pike and muskie are the most popular targets among Lake Winnebago's large game fishermen. Both of these species are found in deep waters and can be caught by trolling. Trolling should be done with large spoons or spinners at a speed of 2 to 6 miles per hour. Yellow perch is also a predominant species of Winnebago. Crankbaits are among the best tackle options for this species. During the coldest months of winter, fishermen can partake in Lake Winnebago's unique ice fishing opportunities in order to target yellow perch. Clams, nightcrawlers, and a variety of artificial worms are great choices.
