Fishing

As the deepest and one of the largest lakes in Wisconsin, Big Green Lake is able to support a large and growing community of gamefish.  While many popular species of fish can be found in Big Green Lake, the most frequently targeted include northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, musky, walleye, lake trout, brown trout, yellow perch, crappie, and bluegill.

The northern pike are plentiful and frequently targeted by trophy anglers.  This fish is often found along the shoreline and other sheltered areas during the mornings and evenings.  Puchyan Creek, Hill Creek, and the northern shorelines are all excellent for targeting northern pike. Check the inflow and outflow streams which feed the lake for moving water as baitfish will congrigate and attract the larger predator fish. Being a deep lake trolling strategies can be productive around points and weed edges.

Largemouth bass can typically be targeted beyond drop offs and around lake points.  The edges of weed beds and areas of submerged timber are also excellent places for largemouth bass fishing.  All of the lake’s creeks are great for bass fishing. Look for bass off the many fish cribs in Green Lake.  There are 42 cribs near the Puchyan Creek outflow in 14-28 feet of water which will attract bass.

Smallmouth Bass are very active in the spring and can be located around points and rock ledges. Look for smalls off Blackbird Point and Pigeon Cove.

While there are not enormous populations of musky in Big Green Lake, the species is present and can be targeted throughout deep waters.  Trolling all regions of the lake beyond drop offs is a sound strategy due to the species’ large range. A good strategy is to locate the fish cribs and troll these areas for hungry muskies (Crib Map).  Target main lake points near Sugar Loaf, Sandstone Bluff and Blackbird Point can prove productive for big fish.

Walleye HoldWalleye can also be targeted in these deep regions between early spring and late fall.  During the spring, fishermen who favor quantity over size can find a decent amount of walleye near their shoreline spawning locations. Look for deeper weed edges in the summer and target drop-offs near fish cribs for suspended walleye.

Various trout can be targeted in areas of cool, moving water.  Influx points and other areas where fresh water enters Green Lake is the ideal location for trout fishing.  Under normal conditions, trout can be found near the shoreline.  The lake contains both Lake Trout and Brown Trout.  Troll deep edges for both species of trout found in the lake.

Perch.jpgPanfish such as bluegill yellow perch and crappie can be found in various sheltered regions of the lake.  Silver Creek, Puchyan Creek, Hill Creek, and all of the shoreline areas are excellent for targeting panfish.  Good areas include the fish cribs off Sandstone Bluff and Pleasant Point.  The use of light tackle, live bait or fly gear is recommended.
