Fishing
Anglers will find that Burt Lake offers a plethora of fishing opportunities due to the range of game fish ranging from docile panfish to champion fighters. Some of the major species of Burt Lake include crappie, bullhead, bluegill, brown trout, channel catfish, green sunfish, lake sturgeon, largemouth bass, musky, northern pike, pumpkinseed sunfish, rainbow trout, rock bass, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. As it is in most freshwater bodies of water across the entire North American continent, the largemouth bass is one of the most popular targeted species in Burt Lake. This game fish can be found in average abundance throughout most of the lake. Notable largemouth bass fishing spots include Colonial Point, Cedar Point, and White Goose Bay. At these locations, fishermen should find areas of water near drop offs, weed beds, or under tree branches that hang over the water. Great tackle options include spinnerbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits, jigs, topwater lures, and imitation shad. A medium weight rod with a line of 10 to 15 pound test should be used. Muskie is another popular trophy fish that is targeted frequently. This game fish can be best caught by using trolling methods. Trolling at a speed of 2 to 6 miles per hour is ideal. Heavy leaders and large spoons should also be equipped to a trolling rig for optimal results. Once hooked, fishermen should fight the musky to exhaustion before pulling it in; this is a large species that can easily break a line at full strength. The northern pike is also a trophy fish that can be caught through trolling methods. Fishermen should troll at speeds of 2 to 4 miles per hour using large spoons, spinner baits, or crank baits. Shad and herring are great bait choices when targeting northern pike. Musky and northern pike can be found in deep waters across the entire lake, but the area near the dam is an excellent location to target. Pike can also be found near the weed beds of the lake's points during feeding times. Fishermen should also search for pike in deep weed beds. Smallmouth bass enthusiasts will find that Burt Lake offers many opportunities for excitement. In the areas known as Maple Bay and Cedar Point, there are dense populations of smallmouth bass. In these locations, anglers should target smallmouth bass in weed beds, timber, other debris. Topwater lures, jigs, and bobbers can be used effectively. Nightcrawlers and crickets also make for excellent bait. Fly rods are also a popular choice among Burt Lake fishermen. For those in search of trout, the areas of Burt Lake where fresh water enters is a great place to target. Fly rods or light tackle setups should be used. Numerous panfish such as bluegill and crappie offer adventure to casual fishermen and families. These species can be found in shallow waters near obstructions. Light tackle such as jigs and bobbers offer the best chances for a successful capture.
