Caballo Reservoir, New Mexico

Fishing
The opportunities for fishing in Caballo Reservoir are numerous due to a wide selection of abundant game fish. Some Caballo’s species can offer a worthy challenge to even the most experienced of fishermen. The game species of Caballo Reservoir include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, northern pike, walleye, white bass, striped bass, rainbow trout, catfish, and bluegill. The Caballo largemouth bass is a favorite among many anglers of visit the lake. This variety of bass can be targeted throughout areas of the lake near the shoreline, as well as the deeper portions of the Caballo Reservoir. During the mornings and evenings, largemouth bass feed on the lake’s baitfish in weed beds and other sheltered areas. Targeting these areas using a variety of plastics, crankbaits and topwater lures is an effective method for capturing Caballo largemouth bass. During the day, anglers should target the deeper waters of Caballo Reservoir near drop offs and the numerous rocky crevices found throughout the lake. The smallmouth bass is another commonly targeted favorite that can be captured using similar methods. Fishermen should target vegetation and obstacles such as submerged timber and boulders in order to find smallmouth bass. The weed beds near the Percha Flats Campground are often excellent locations for bass fishing. The catfish of Caballo Reservoir can also be targeted in several of the lake’s locations. In order to target this species, fishermen should find the deepest portions of the lake. The most ideal locations include various fishing holes in the open water and the deepest waters near the Caballo Dam. Anglers should attempt to target a variety of these fishing holes by locating them with a depth finder. A standard bottom rig equipped with a line of heavy test and live bait is a good option for fishermen in search of Caballo catfish. Caballo crappie is another popular species that anglers frequently target. Fishermen will find that this species can be found throughout the entire lake in several locations. The most notable areas include shallow areas near the Apache Canyon and Percha Flats Campground. Bank fishing and small boat fishing with light tackle is recommended. The populations of Caballo’s bluegill can be targeted with the same strategies and in the same locations as crappie. Walleye can be targeted near the Percha Flats using traditional methods of live bait or jigs.
