This provides a unique fishing experience to anglers of all styles. Populations of fish found at Cobbosseecontee Lake include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye, striped bass, and lake trout. The most popular species of this cold water lake is the largemouth bass. This species' population is at high levels and can be caught quite frequently at the right time and in the proper locations. The largemouth bass can be caught as early as mid-Spring and as late as mid-Fall. The seasons for bass at Cobbosseecontee Lake are shorter than its southern counterparts because of the harsh Winters that Maine often experiences. During the coldest times of the bass season, fishermen should fish in deeper portions of the lake. The ideal depth is 10 to 20 feet. At these locations fishermen should use light tackle such as spinners, jigs, or crankbaits. Many different set-ups are successful, so it is important to experiment if the bass are not biting. The most successful season for catching the largemouth bass is during the Summer. During this period, the waters become warmer and the bass move to the shallow waters. Largemouth tend to linger in the sandy beds near hydrilla and other aquatic plants. These are usually excellent places to cast a line with a light tackle set-up. Walleye is a very popular fish of Cobbosseecontee Lake and is unique to the cold waters of the area. This fish puts up an excellent fight. During the Spring, walleye can be caught in the shallow sand beds using crank baits and jigs. Brightly colored tackle usually works the best. When fishing at night, trolling is the best method to catch large walleye. Trolling at a speed of 4 to 6 miles per hour is ideal. During the Summer and Fall, Walleye travel to deeper waters. The best methods for catching them during this season is by trolling or by using light tackle at a depth of 15 to 30 feet. A five or ten pound test should be used, depending on the fishermen's skill level. Many other species of fish can be caught in Cobbosseecontee Lake in varying depths.
