Some of the primary game fish species of Lake Audubon include northern pike, muskie, yellow perch, walleye, black crappie, white bass, freshwater drum, smallmouth bass, and burbot. The northern pike is a large bony fish that has the ability to put up a challenging fight. This species can be tricky to catch if the proper strategies are not used. In order to catch this species, fishermen should travel to open water and rely on trolling methods. Trolling should be done at a speed of 2 to 4 miles per hour using large spoons, spinnerbaits, or crankbaits. Wire leaders and a line with a test of at least 20 pounds should be used. A pike can grow beyond 40 pounds, so it is necessary to use strong equipment. Fishermen can also target deep weed beds during feeding times. At these locations, fishermen should slap the water with large spoons in order to entice a northern pike. Ideal baits include minnows, anchovies, and herring. The other large predator of Lake Audubon is the muskie. This species is a very large trophy target that is commonly targeted by experienced fishermen. Trolling at speeds of 2 to 5 miles per hour is the most reliable method of muskie fishing. Ideal tackle options include large spoons, jigs, and spinnerbaits. As with all large trophy fish, wire leaders and heavy line should be used on medium to heavy weight rods when dealing with muskie. This species roams the entire lake, so targeting the open waters of Lake Audubon is the best available option. Due to the high activity of many different species of fish near the dam, this is a great location to target large predators such as muskie and pike. Walleye can be targeted in the same area using crankbaits. This species can also be found in the shallow areas of Audubon during the Spring. Lake Audubon also has a dense population of crappie. This small game fish can offer a feisty fight which provides some excitement to both beginners and avid fishermen. Fishermen searching for crappie should target the shorelines and piers of Lake Audubon. Light tackle and baits such as nightcrawlers, minnows, and artificial worms should be include in any effective setup. The northernmost point of Lake Audubon is excellent location to search for crappie. Smallmouth bass can also be found in a large abundance at the northern point of this body of water. Fishermen in search of this popular species should cast lines near weed beds, pilings, submerged timber, and other debris. Smallmouth bass can be captured using topwater lures, spinners, bobbers, and fly rods.
