Every year, thousands of fishermen travel to Lake Champlain in order to to take advantage of the huge number of opportunities presented by the lake's healthy and abundant community of fish. This is one of the most diverse bodies of water in the United States that will surely satisfy the preferences of any fisherman who visits. The major species of fish at Lake Champlain include yellow perch, rock bass, crappie, sunfish, white perch, smelt, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, pickerel, Atlantic salmon, muskie, walleye, lake trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, catfish, bullhead, and sturgeon. These species offer adventure to both adrenaline-seeking large game fishermen and casual anglers of small game. The smallmouth bass populations in Lake Champlain are quite high, which allows for successful trips by both individual fishermen and charters. Anglers will find that the chances of successfully catching a smallmouth bass increase greatly by targeting areas in coves and near the shoreline. These areas are sheltered from turbulent waters and predators, so smallmouth bass are able to thrive in large numbers. This species should be targeted using any variety of light tackle; light colored jigs and topwater lures are popular choices. Smallmouth bass in Champlain are commonly caught in the 3 pound range, but several 6-pounders have also been captured and released. Although not as abundant as smallmouth, largemouth bass can be also be found in Lake Champlain. Spinners, buzz baits, and jigs should be used near drop-offs and hydrilla beds in order to catch this popular target. As with most cold waters of the north, muskie is a common target. This species is a large trophy fish that can put up an excellent fight. The best method of catching a muskie is by trolling at a speed of 3 to 6 miles per hour using large spoons or spinners. Once hooked, it is necessary to fight a muskie to exhaustion before reeling one in; it can easily break a line with its full strength. Northern pike and Atlantic salmon are also species that can be captured using trolling methods. In order to catch these species, fishermen should troll at a speed of 2 to 5 miles per hour using large spoons or shiny lures. Frozen herring is an ideal bait choice. For fishermen who enjoy targeting walleye, this species can be targeted in the depths of Lake Champlain using crankbaits. They can be caught in large numbers near the shore during the Spring, but tend to reside in deeper waters during the rest of the year.

The Lake
Lake Champlain is the largest lake in the entire northeast region of America. It covers a total area of 490 square miles. This lake has a maximum length and width of 125 miles and 14 miles, respectively. At its deepest point, Champlain is 400 feet. It has an average depth of 64 feet. The total shoreline of Lake Champlain is measured at 587 miles.
