Located in the picturesque countryside of Alabama and Georgia, Lake Eufaula, also known as the Walter F. George Lake, is one of the South's premier locations for fishing and watersports. Lake Eufaula is a reservoir formed by a dam off of the Chattahoochee River. It boasts high abundances of game species and large fish sizes.

Fishing
Anglers will find that Lake Eufaula is an excellent location for fishing regardless of one's skill level. This artificial lake offers a variety of species that range from renowned trophy fish to popular favorites among casual fishermen. Some of the major species in Lake Eufaula include largemouth bass, striped bass, blue catfish, channel catfish, spotted bass, black crappie, and bluegill. Since there is such a high abundance of bass species throughout the entire reservoir, Lake Eufaula has earned the nickname of "bass capital of the world". This draws in fishermen to Lake Eufaula from across the entire North American continent. The largemouth bass population of Lake Eufaula is quite abundant in comparison to even some of the best bass lakes throughout the entire country. Fishermen who go to Lake Eufaula in search of largemouth bass should be sure to target the southernmost portion of the lake, as there is a dense growth of hydrilla and other aquatic plants in this area. Largemouth bass tend to hide in these areas during the morning and evening. During the day, it becomes necessary for fishermen to target the deeper waters of the reservoir. Regardless of which area is fished, light tackle is the best option available. Spinners, buzz baits, and jigs all work very well when paired with a line of a medium test. The many bass tournaments held at Lake Eufaula each year is a key indicator of the excellent opportunities for largemouth bass fishing. The catfish is also a species that is commonly targeted by the fishermen of Lake Eufaula. This lake is home to a citation blue catfish that weighed just over 80 pounds. Lake Eufaula also has a high abundance of channel catfish. For either species, fishermen should search for areas that are deep. The area near the dam where the water begins to calm down is an excellent place to begin targeting catfish. A bottom rig equipped to a line with a test of 15 to 20 pounds is the best setup for catfishing. Ideal catfish baits include chicken livers, stink baits, and a large variety of cut baits. There are also numerous small fish species that are great for families including black crappie and bluegill.

Lake Eufaula has several facilities that will ensure that visits are enjoyable. These include paved boat ramps, piers, marinas, fueling stations, tackle shops, grocery stores, and lodging.
The Lake
Considering that Lake Eufaula covers portions of both Alabama and Georgia, it is a rather large reservoir. This lake covers a total area of 45,181 acres and has a shoreline that is approximately 640 miles in length. At its deepest point, Lake Eufaula is 40 feet. Its average depth is 16 feet. These large measurements allow Lake Eufaula to support a large and healthy community of fish while providing anglers with plenty of room to enjoy a day on the water.
All serious freshwater anglers should visit Lake Eufaula at least once.
