Fishing

Lake Lanier has a large and healthy community of the popular freshwater fish found throughout warm waters in the United States.  The most popular of these species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, crappie,bluegill, and catfish. 

The largemouth bass is a species that offers a solid chance to all anglers.  Lanier Largemouth Bass can be found throughout the lake near drop offs and weed beds.  Specifically, fishermen should target Six Mile Creek and the area along the shoreline near the Longstreet Bridge.  Anglers targeting largemouth bass should use a medium-weight rod equipped with a line of 12-pound test.  Ideal tackle includes crankbaits, jigs, and buzzbaits. 

Smallmouth bass can be targeted in the shallower areas of these weed beds and near submerged timber, tree stumps, and other obstructions.  The area under the Thompson Bridge and Six Mile Creek are both prime spots for smallmouth bass fishing.  A light rod with a line of 10-pound test is sufficient for this species.  Fishermen should use topwater lures, crankbaits or jigs.  

Striped bass can be captured throughout the lake in deeper waters.  The waters near the Buford Dam are a good place to target.  Trolling at speeds of 2 to 4 miles per hour is a good tactic for fishermen targeting Lanier striped bass.  Bunker spoons, jigs, and umbrella rigs are all excellent tackle options.  A medium-weight rod with at least a line of 15-pound test is recommended. 

Catfish can also be captured in the deep waters of Lake Lanier.  Fishermen should target the area near the Buford Dam and other deep holes using bottom rigs and a rod with a line of 15 to 20-pound test.  Good baits include stink baits, nightcrawlers, and any kind of cutbait. 

Crappie and bluegill can be caught from piers and along the shoreline throughout the entirety of Lake Lanier.  These are best captured by using light tackle options such as small jigs and live bait.
