This large variety of fish species make Lake Ouachita ideal for fishermen of all skill levels, but even the most experienced of anglers will be able to find an exciting challenge. The rainbow trout is a game species that is common to the entire state of Arkansas, so it is a favorite among the locals at Lake Ouachita. This species prefers cold moving water, so rainbow trout can be found in dense populations near the dam where water flows into the lake from the Ouachita River. Fly fishermen will find that Ouachita's rainbow trout will put their skills to the test. The channel catfish is another species that is targeted by many fishermen. The largest catfish caught at Lake Ouachita was 30 pounds and a strong fighter. Ever since this catch, fishermen have been seeking a channel catfish that will break this record. This is a stream fish and can often be found in deep holes near fast moving waters. Fishermen should cast a bottom-rig set-up in order to reach these locations. Chicken livers, cheese, stink baits, and other natural baits with a strong scent are all very effective. The prime time to catch channel catfish is between May and August. As a popular game fish of most fresh bodies of water, the largemouth bass population has also experienced an incredible amount of praise. This species is usually about 3 pounds, but a 16-pounder has also been caught in Arkansas waters. The largemouth bass eats just about anything and can be frequently caught close to shore during the early morning and evening. The best months to catch largemouth bass are May, June, and JUly. Fishermen should target weedy areas, logs, and rocks using jigs, spinners, or crankbaits. The numerous species of game fish and panfish in Lake Ouachita ensure that there is a new challenge available to fishermen during every visit.

The Lake
Lake Ouachita is the largest lake completely contained within Arkansas state boundaries. It has an area of 63 miles and a total shore length of 690 miles. Its average depth is 50 feet. This large body of water is able to maintain populations of large game fish due to its sheer size and healthy habitats.
