Fishing
Lake Pepin is characterized by protected structures and plentiful weed beds that allow fish populations to grow and thrive. Among the many fish species in Lake Pepin, the predominant game targets include crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, sauger, rock bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, white bass and catfish.
The northern pike is common to many northern waters and is frequently targeted by Pepin’s serious anglers. Targeting locations where there is plentiful bait and panfish is a good strategy to find pike. Ideal locations for northern pike fishing include the shoreline near Maiden Rock, Reads Landing, and Alma.
The walleye in Lake Pepin are also popular targets and can be found in similar locations during the spring spawning season. Targeting major lake points and shallow waters is a sound strategy for catching walleye during spring months. Throughout most of the rest of the year, walleye can found beyond drop-offs and in deeper regions of the lake. Red Wing, Frontenac, and Wacouta are all excellent locations for targeting walleye.
Largemouth bass can be targeted near weed beds and on the edges of drop offs during feeding hours. Fishermen should target this species in locations where baitfish and smaller species reside. Wacouta Beach, Maiden Rock, Red Wing, and various locations along Pepin’s shoreline are usually hotspots for largemouth bass fishing. The rock and smallmouth bass can be targeted in these locations as well, but they can also be found in shallower regions such as the weed beds closer to the shore and creeks. A variety of light tackle is ideal for bass fishing.
The most abundant panfish of Lake Pepin include black crappie, white crappie, yellow perch and bluegill. These species can be located in and near the shallow weed beds along the shoreline and in creeks. Reads Landing and the shallowest waters near Red Wing and Frontenac State Park are great places to begin fishing for these panfish.
