PikeThe northern pike are among some of the most popular fish in Lake Winnibigoshish and offer considerable value for sports fishermen.  While trolling the open waters of Lake Winnibigoshish is ideal during the day, anglers should resort to targeting various shallow locations throughout the lake.  Such locations include Stoney Point, Tamarack Point, and the weed beds near the shore of Sugar Island.  Trolling and using light tackle are ideal strategies.  Winnibigoshish still claims the Minnesota State Record Musky. Hardly considered a lake with high numbers of Muskies, Winnie’s claim to fame is the above average size. Most folks who fish Musky on the big lake enjoy catching fish in the mid 40 inch range with numbers of fish over 50 inches caught and released every season.

Walleye can be targeted between early spring and late fall.  During the spring, fishermen can target walleyes’ spawning locations in shallow areas of Lake Winnibigoshish.  Throughout the remainder of the year, anglers should target deeper waters.  Crankbaits are usually one of the best tackle choices for targeting walleye.

Rock bass can be targeted in shallower, protected areas throughout the lake.  This includes areas such as the shores near Sugar Lake, Sugar Island, Stoney Point, and Tamarack Point.  Various areas along the lake’s shoreline are also prime rock bass fishing locations.

Also found in shallow areas, crappie bluegill and yellow perch are popular among both recreational and seasoned fishermen.  This species tends to reside near structures, weed beds, submerged timber, and other areas protected from the open water.  These fish seek out locations where Crayfish abound. Mixed gravel and weeds, light rock and other hard bottom areas are key locations.  Ideal fishing locations include Battle Point, Sugarbush Point, Tamarack Point, and the shores near Cut Foot Sioux Lake.
