Lake Winnipesaukee has a large and healthy community of game fish. This community is very diverse and offers game fish of many different sizes and difficulties. Some of the game species found in Lake Winnipesaukee include rainbow trout, striped bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye, bowfin, drum, channel catfish, blue catfish, and sunfish. Numerous species of baitfish and smaller game can also be caught. The rainbow trout is a species that is commonly targeted due to its high abundance in Lake Winnipesaukee. Fishermen in search of rainbow trout should search areas of cold, moving water. The locations where the Gunstock, Merrymeeting, Melvin, and Red Hill Rivers feed into the lake are all great places to search for rainbow trout. The dam is also a great location due to the turbulent water. Fly fishermen are often most successful rainbow trout anglers, but light tackle such as spinners, spoons, and jigs can also be used effectively. Fishermen should equip a light rod and reel with a line of 2 pound test. This species is known to be a picky eater, so it may be necessary to experiment with different tackle options until something works. Most rainbow trout weight between less than a pound to 3 pounds and jump when it hooked. This can make the species hard to catch if one is not used to trout fishing. The walleye is another popular target of Lake Winnipesaukee's fishermen. This is a cold water fish found in fresh bodies of water all across the colder regions of North America. At Lake Winnipesaukee, fishermen should cast light tackle setups in the deeper areas. This species commonly weighs in near 10 pounds, so they can put up a strong fight. As a favorite of most freshwater locations globally, the largemouth bass population also experiences a large amount of targeting. Due to the cold waters of the deeper portions of Lake WInnipesaukee, the largemouth bass tends to reside in the shallow waters near the shore. Fishermen should target hydrilla beds and obstacles like fallen trees and old piers. During the spawning season, largemouth bass fishing is very successful due to the dense abundance of bass that move close to the shore to reproduce. Light tackle options ranging from jigs to buzzbaits are successful.
