Fishing
Lay Lake is a healthy body of water with opportunities for a many different fishermen. Anglers can catch a variety of fish ranging from large trophy fish to smaller game fish. Some of the major species of Lay Lake include largemouth bass, spotted bass, striped bass, crappie, bream, channel catfish, blue catfish, and sunfish. This lake is most known for its abundant populations of bass. Largemouth bass is a species that is a common target by many tournament fishermen and recreational fishermen of many skill levels. The larger varieties of this species can present a strong challenge for even the most avid of fishermen. Fishermen targeting this species should travel to an area in the center of the lake that is parallel to Talladega Spring. This location is filled with many coves, creeks, and areas sheltered from the open water of Lay Lake. In these areas, fishermen can find submerged timber, weed beds, and narrow water sloughs that serve as perfect habitats for Lay Lake's largemouth bass. Once in an ideal fishing location, anglers should use deep diving crankbaits, spinners, imitation shad, and jigs. Striped bass is another popular species of Lay Lake that puts up a very strong fight. This species can be found throughout the entire lake, but fishermen should be sure to target deep waters for optimal results. There are many great locations near the Lay Dam that have abundant populations of striped bass. A depth finder can be used to find other decent fishing spots. A bottom rig or trolling rig should be used in order to catch striped bass. Trolling should be done at a speed of 2 to 4 miles per hour using spinners or bluefish rigs. Shiny tackle often works better than neutrally colored options. The numerous varieties of catfish can be caught in the same locations as striped bass using a bottom rig. Since the blue variety of catfish can grow to very large sizes, fishermen should equip a medium weight rod with a line of at least a 20 pound test. For the more casual fishermen, the crappie populations are very abundant. Fishermen should search for this species in the shallow waters of Lay Lake. The best locations for catching crappie includes the piers and long shoreline of Lay Lake. Pilings, lake points, and weed beds are often great things to target. A variety of light tackle or fly rods can be used effectively. Various other panfish such as sunfish can be caught in the same location using similar methods.
