Fishing
Leech Lake offers some of the best opportunities for game fishing in the entire state of Minnesota. The primary species that can be caught throughout Leech Lake include walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, musky, largemouth bass, eelpout, bluegill, sunfish, and crappie.
Some considers musky the favorite target of Leech Lake. In the spring target the cabbage beds in 6-8 feet of water. As the water warms up in the summer months, fish fast moving spinnerbaits on deep weed edges, sand bars and rock bars. Try throwing topwater lures for the ultimate musky experience. Fall is “big fish” time. Hit open water areas, deep weed edges and rock bars with bigger lures like bull dawgs, suicks and deep diving crankbaits. Productive areas include points off Pelican & Bear islands, Walker Bay, Grassy Point and Sand Point.
Northern Pike are a common target among the trophy fishermen of Leech Lake. This species grows to large sizes and presents an excellent challenge. Fishermen should target open waters during the day and weed beds during the morning and evening feeding times. Walker Bay and the waters surrounding Bear Island can be prime locations for pike fishing.
Walleye are a popular quarry for both fun and food. In the spring fish points, shorelines and shallow flats. Hit the deeper rock bars and structure as well as cabbage beds in the summer and fall. The areas near Walker Bay, Bear Island, West Goose Flats, Pine & Cedar Point are excellent locations to find walleye. Between early spring and late autumn, large walleye can be targeted in the deeper, open waters of Leech Lake.
Yellow perch, sunfish, bluegill and crappie can all be targeted from the shore or from piers and small boats. Fishermen in search of these species can target many of Leech Lake’s shallow areas. This includes the waters near Pelican Island, Agency Bay, Steamboat Bay, and several other areas. As a popular game species across the entire United States, the largemouth bass is another species that is frequently targeted by Leech Lake’s visitors.
Leech Lake has a plentiful population of largemouth bass that can be found in locations near drop offs and the open water. Steamboat Bay and Walker Bay are among the notable locations for targeting bass in Leech Lake.
