Fishing
Due to the numerous waterways that feed into the area, the Louisiana Delta is easily one of the best locations for fishing in the entire state of Louisiana. There are excellent opportunities for fishermen ranging from the casual weekend angler to professional tournament competitors. Some of the primary game fish in the Louisiana Delta include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, bluegill, and sunfish. Most fishermen will agree that, while there are excellent opportunities for other fish in the Louisiana Delta, the largemouth bass population in the delta is what draws many anglers to this renowned location. A large majority of the Louisiana Delta's area is an ideal habitat for largemouth bass. This is due to the fact that the Louisiana Delta is comprised of canals, narrow rivers, ponds, lakes, and bayous that are ideal for largemouth bass. The species can often be found on the edges of weed beds. Gaps in dense beds of hydrilla are also excellent places to search for largemouth bass. Although largemouth bass can be found throughout the majority of the Louisiana Delta, Bayou Black, Des Allemands, Venice, and Delacroix are great places to target. All of these areas provide the perfect environment for largemouth bass and several large ones have been consistently caught. Once a good fishing location has been established, fishermen should cast a medium weight rod equipped with light tackle. Ideal tackle options include plastic worms, tube jigs, and spinnerbaits. Since there are so many locations for largemouth bass fishing, it is a wise decision to move on to a new location if there are no bites after waiting at a particular location for 15 minutes. Fishermen will also find many opportunities to catch panfish due to the shallow waters and dense beds of weeds. This is the ideal habitat for bluegill and sunfish. In order to catch these species, fishermen should target canals using light tackle. Jigs and topwater lures are the best tackle options. Anglers should use nightcrawlers or artificial worms for optimal results. Once caught, these panfish can be cooked in order to make a tasty dish. Although the Louisiana Delta is not famous for it, there is an average abundance of channel catfish. This species can be found in deeper portions of the Delta. Fishermen should use bottom rigs equipped with stink baits or chicken livers for best results.
