Fishing
The species of O.H. Ivie Lake include many of the favorite targets of southern and southwestern fishermen. The primary targets include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill. The largemouth bass is the most popular target of O.H. Ivie and it also happens to be the species that anglers have the most success with.
Fishermen in search of largemouth bass should focus their attention on the lake’s rock ledges and weed beds during the morning and evening feeding times. Due to the high temperatures during the day, it will be necessary for anglers to target deeper waters in between the normal feeding hours. Good locations for targeting bass in O.H. Ivie Lake include Elm Creek, Grape Creek, and various shorelines such as those near Concho Park. Smallmouth bass can be caught in similar areas. The shorelines, rocky areas, and other portions of the lake sheltered from the open water tend to be excellent for targeting smallmouth bass.
White bass should be targeted by focusing on the habitats provided by the standing timber and various aquatic plants of O.H. Ivie Lake. Targeting the flooded willows in several of the reservoir’s sprawls is a sound strategy for targeting bass.
Various species of catfish such as channel and flathead are common to O.H. Ivie Lake. As in other locations, the catfish are often found in the deepest areas of the lake near the bottom. Such locations include the deep regions near the dam and various fishing holes that can be located through the use of a depth finder. The use of bottom rigs is ideal.
Crappie, bluegill and sunfish have reasonable populations and can be targeted near standing timber, weed beds, and rock formations. O.H. Ivies’ flooded willows also offer excellent habitats for these species. Good areas for targeting panfish include Elm Creek, grape Creek, and the lakes various sprawls. Light tackle or fly gear is recommended and night fishing is often most productive.
