Fishing

With a large and diverse community of fish, anglers can enjoy targeting many of Mississippi’s favorite freshwater species.  The primary game targets of Okatibbee Lake include redear sunfish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, striped bass, and crappie.

As it is in many other waters across the south and southwestern United States, the largemouth bass is a popular target among both competitive and recreational fishermen.  This species can be targeted near rocks, weed beds, and drop offs during the morning and evening feeding times.  It is necessary to target deeper waters when shallow regions become warm on hot days.  The shoreline near Collinsville, GIn Creek, Pine Springs, and the rocks near the dam are excellent for largemouth bass fishing.

The crappie of Okatibbee are abundant and can be targeted along the shoreline and in creeks.  Good areas to begin searching for this species is in the weed beds and other obstructions of Pine Springs, Gin Creek, West Bank, East Bank, and Cove’s Nest Marina.  Other panfish such as redear sunfish and bluegill can also be effectively targeted in these locations.

Striped bass can be caught by trolling the deep regions of the lake such as those near the dam and above Twiltley Branch.

The channel catfish of Okatibbee can be targeted on the bottom of lake in some its deepest regions.  Such locations include the deep holes near Cove’s Nest Marina, the waters near the dam, and various fishing holes that can be found with the use of a depth finder.
