Located in a calm and relaxing area of Southwest Mississippi, Okhissa Lake offers some of the best opportunities for freshwater fishing in the entire state. Okhissa is a reservoir in Homochitto National Forest with a fish habitat that was engineered specifically for the purpose of high quality fishing. Opened for fishing in 2010 this is a Bill Dance Signature Lake with about 600 gravel spawning beds constructed for bream, and another 100 smaller beds for bass. Due to a large and balanced community of healthy game fish, anglers who visit Okhissa Lake will surely partake in an incredible fishing experience.

Fishing
Okhissa Lake offers large populations of the South’s most favorite game species. This diversity ensures that anglers of all preferences and skill levels have the opportunity to enjoy a great fishing experience. Okhissa Lake is stocked with bluegill, redear, crappie, threadfin shad, channel catfish, fathead minnows and largemouth bass.
Largemouth bass can be found throughout the lake in the flooded timber and many coves. Search shallow weedy and rocky areas early and late in the day. The bass tend to remain in the open waters around drop-offs adjacent to weeds and rocks throughout the day. Ideal locations to target this species includes the many narrow sprawls on the northeast portion of central Okhissa Lake. Always hit the main lake points with a variety of tackle ranging from soft plastics, spinner baits to crank baits. Channel catfish can be targeted at the bottom of the deepest regions of Okhissa Lake. The best locations for targeting this species includes the central portion of the lake and the northernmost area. The depth varies between 50 and 80 feet in these areas.
The bluegill, sunfish, and crappie of Okhissa are all fun to catch and tasty. These species can be found in the shallow areas near the shoreline, as well as the northeastern and northwestern sprawls. Fishermen should target the sandy bottoms near weed beds, rocks, and other obstacles.
Facilities
Okhissa Lake has two paved boat ramps for use by fishermen. Nearby, there are also restaurants, tackle shops, grocery stores, fueling stations, and lodging.
The Lake
Okhissa Lake is fairly large with a total surface area of 1,100 acres. It is 80 feet deep at its maximum depth. Depending on the season’s rainfall and level of silt in the water, clarity fluctuates between 3 and 6 feet throughout the year. Okhissa Lake is located 292 feet above sea level.
This fishing location is excellent for the angler in search of a good spot for targeting the most popular species of the southern United States.
