Fishing
Pueblo Reservoir is home to a plethora of game fish species ranging from the small panfish loved by families to the large trophy fighters targeted by avid anglers. There are opportunities for fishermen of all goals and interests. Some of the main species of game fish in Pueblo Reservoir include black crappie, channel catfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, walleye, bluegill, and yellow perch. The black crappie is a species that can be found in large abundance throughout Pueblo Reservoir. This fish tends to linger in areas of shallow water near the shoreline. Weed beds, pilings, timber piles, and other obstructions are excellent places to search for crappie. This species is relatively small, so a line of 5 to 10 pound test is ideal. Fishermen targeting crappie have seen much success by using light tackle such as topwater lures, jigs, and bobbers. Nightcrawlers and crickets are great bait choices. The largemouth bass is a popular target in most freshwater rivers and lakes. This species can be found in average abundances at large sizes. Largemouth bass can be found in a variety of locations. Some notable areas for largemouth bass fishing at Pueblo Reservoir include weed beds, drop offs, coves, and areas underneath of overhanging tree branches. Regardless of location, fishermen should rely on light tackle such as crankbaits, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. During the middle of the day or during extreme weather conditions, fishermen should resort to targeting the deeper waters of Pueblo Reservoir. Another favorite among Pueblo Reservoir fishermen is the walleye. This fish is renowned for its ability to put up a strong fight. This species is stocked annually, but walleye travel to the shallows to spawn each year during the Spring. During the remainder of the year, anglers can find walleye in deeper waters throughout the lake. Fishermen should rely primarily on crankbaits and spinners. A line with a test of 15 to 20 pounds should be used, as this species tends to thrash during its fight. A walleye should be fought to exhaustion before considering reeling it in. Fly fishermen will find that the rainbow trout populations will offer an exciting adventure. Rainbow trout are stocked annually and have an above average abundance at Pueblo Reservoir. Fishermen can find this species near inlets where there is moving cold water. Panfish such as bluegill also offer plenty of excitement to casual fishermen and families who wish to enjoy a fun and relaxing day on the water.
