Anglers will find that there is a surplus of opportunities for the fisherman who enjoys a challenge. Sam Rayburn Reservoir offers large trophy fish as well as the fun panfish. Some of the major species of fish at Sam Rayburn Reservoir include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, white bass, black bass, bream, redear sunfish, and walleye.

While both largemouth and smallmouth bass can be found in Sam Rayburn, the largemouth variety can be found in high abundance. The prime season for catching largemouth bass is between the months of May and October. This species can be found in weed beds during the spawning season, but fishermen should search areas near the edges of weed beds and drop-offs during the other parts of the year. Anglers should target these locations using light tackle. Many varieties are successful, but crank baits, buzz baits, and jigs are often effective. A light to medium weight rod equipped with a line of a 5 to 10 pound test is also a wise choice. Ideal baits include nightcrawlers and artificial worms.

For those fishermen who are limited to the shore or prefer a casual day with the family, Sam Rayburn's populations of crappie and redear sunfish make for an excellent day at the lake. These species can be caught along the shoreline and fishing piers near pilings and weed beds. A light rod equipped with light colored jigs or topwater lures are both great tackle options. A fly rod can also be used. Both species are usually small, but they can put up a feisty fight. They also make for excellent meals when cooked properly.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir has an average abundance of catfish that should be noted by fishermen interested in targeting either channel or blue catfish. These species can grow to large weights and often provide a challenge to fishermen. In order to catch catfish, fishermen should travel to deep fishing holes at piers or in the middle of the lake. Once in position, a bottom rig equipped to a medium weight rod with a line of 15 to 20 pound test should be cast. Stink baits, chicken livers, and nightcrawlers are all decent bait choices. Fishermen will find that all of Sam Rayburn's fish species offer some form of excitement to people of different styles and preferences.

Sam Rayburn Reservoir is one of the largest reservoirs in the entire southwest region of the United states. It covers a total area of 114,500 acres and has a maximum depth of 80 feet.
