Fishing

Fishermen of Sebago know the lake for its plentiful populations of game fish.  Among the numerous species in this body of water, the most notable include landlocked salmon, lake trout, brook trout, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass.  The landlocked salmon is one of the most prized targets of Sebago due to the strong challenge that the species offers to fishermen of all skill levels.  Fishermen in search of this species of salmon should follow the schools of smelt. The smelt is the main food source of landlocked salmon, so these schools are excellent to target during the morning and evening feeding times.  Using a boat to troll is one of the best techniques for targeting this species.  Live smelt and smelt-imitating artificial lures are the best options available in terms of tackle.  Due to the strong endurance and fighting ability of the landlocked salmon, a medium to heavy rod is recommended.  The cold waters throughout most of the lake are all ideal as long as a boat is available to reach them.  The trout species of Sebago Lake can be targeted in the flowing water near the Presumpscot River.  After heavy rainfalls, anglers should focus their efforts on the shallower waters near this section of the lake.  Deeper waters should be targeted when water levels are low.  A variety of flies and light tackle work effectively for Sebago trout.  While not nearly as prevalent as salmon and trout, the largemouth and smallmouth bass populations offer some opportunities between the May and mid-Autumn.  Both species can be caught using light tackle in the areas known as Turtle Cove and the Dingly Islands.  Due to the cold waters, the population of smallmouth bass is far more prevalent than the largemouth variety.
