Fishing

While Shell Lake is not as large as some of its neighboring bodies of water, it boasts an exceptionally healthy community of trophy fish.  In this fishery, the most commonly targeted species include smallmouth bass, walleye, musky, crappie, yellow perch, largemouth bass, bluegill and northern pike. 

The smallmouth bass is the most abundant species in Shell Lake, so fishermen from across the entire state of Wisconsin often travel to the lake for a successful day on the water.  In general, smallmouth bass reside in sheltered areas such as rocks, weed beds, areas of submerged timber, and shoreline areas.  In Shell Lake, the shoreline furthest to the southwest and the northern shorelines are very rocky and ideal for smallmouth bass fishing.  Since Shell Lake is frequently targeted by bass fishermen, it may be necessary to target various sheltered locations in order to take full advantage of the species’ dense population. 

The musky is Shell Lake’s premier trophy target that offers considerable challenges to experienced fishermen.  Target the weeds on the east shoreline of Shell Lake for big musky in late spring.  In the summer rip fast moving baits over the deeper weed edges and rocks, the southwest shore is a good spot for summer musky.  Fish the edges of the island in the south western area of the lake near the airport for hot musky action.

Large walleye can also be frequently caught in Shell’s deep waters between early spring and late fall.  During the summer walleye can be found along the weed flat on the west side of the Shell's southern bay.  Many cribs have been placed off the north and east shores of Shell Lake in 17-22 feet of water that hold Walleye and other fish.

While Shell Lake is not the best location for targeting this species, northern pike are also present in Shell Lake.  Northern pike can be targeted near weed beds during the morning and evening feeding times. 

Not nearly as abundant as the smallmouth variety, largemouth bass can be targeted near lake points and beyond dropoffs.  Although this usually only becomes an issue during the hottest summer days, targeting largemouth bass in deeper waters once midday hits is a sound strategy.  The northeastern portion of Shell Lake is suitable for largemouth bass fishing. 

Panfish such as crappie yellow perch and bluegill are popular targets among both boat and shoreline fishermen.  These species can be targeted in Shell Lake’s shallowest regions through the use of light tackle or fly gear.  Target the shallow weedy areas near the southern portion of the lake and near any fish cribs.  Any of the lake’s piers or shorelines are ideal for targeting panfish.

The facilities and accommodations of Shell Lake include paved boat landings, public access points, lodging, restrooms, stores, tackle shops, public piers, cleanng stations, fueling stations, boat rentals, and fishing guides.

The Lake

Shell Lake has a surface area of 2,513 acres.  At its deepest point, Shell Lake is 36 feet.  Under normal rainfall and runoff conditions, water clarity is low.  Heavy vegetation is also present.
